Electric "racing" bikes?

Are there any electric racing bikes out there ? I would love to try one,
it will be very fast . Everybody seems to insist on getting a battered old
mountain bike that weighs more than most cars and converting that.
Someone must have a lightweight road bike conversion ?
There has to be some speed/efficiency gains to be had from using a bike
that is designed for the roads rather than a mountain bike ?

Light weight road bike + Lithium ion batteries + motor should make
a pretty decent "e-bike".

I'm not looking to cheat in the tour-de-france btw!

If not then I'm going to have to build one myself 8-)

No mountain bikes allowed on this thread ;)

Am I going crazy ? Must be :P

Channel 5's gadget show did one last week but I can't remember its name but if you look on the gadget shows website or Youtube you will find it. ;)

Thanks for pointing that out! Looked impressive, shame the presenter were too scared to give it a good run

Re: Electric "racing" bikes?

Well, the gadget show won't allow their vid's to be played in the colony across the pond and I'm too lazy to sort through all of the Youtube vid's so no luck there.

Concerning E racing bikes, there are a few people in my town powering 36 V hubs with 96 V. Top speed between 90 and 100 KPH. (this is the part where I don't mention the big clunky overweight type of bikes the hubs are mounted on) So the limitations for you are lacing spokes and mounting battery packs. If you want high voltage and harbor a death wish you can go really really fast on an Ebike YOU build.

Personally I'll stick to my bike that gets 48 MPG in town, riding like I stole it!

Re: Electric "racing" bikes?

There's a lunatic in the States whose hobby is chasing cars to get them to break the speed limit, filming it on a helmet-mounted camera and putting it on YouTube. He's created a Frankenbike with something like 3KW hubs front and rear. I remember I laughed my socks off watching one particular chase where the car cruised past, evidently noticed the nutter coming up fast in the rear mirror, and nudged the speed up. Again and again and again until they're doing about 60.
Lord only knows how long the nutter's going to live, given the braking capabilities and manouverability of a bicycle at those speeds.
Still, it's a laugh, eh?
