TROLLING MOTORS

Evening all
Has anyone on this forum had any dealings with outboard trolling motors being turned into perhaps a wind turbine, only the 12v model i have does put out voltge if the prop is turned, you can feel it cogging when the battery clips are connected together

presume that they are a pmm would they be suitable :?:

Re: TROLLING MOTORS

Hmmm, interesting thought Nodge,
I have one, but that gogs like hell when you turn the prop over. Mine's a Shakespeare unit and it's definately a PM motor.
Best way to find out is to connect a voltmeter to the battery connectors and spin the prob by hand to see what output you get.
They're a tough little unit and being submersible, would be very weatherproof.
I'll dig mine out when I get a chance and I'll post the results here (good or bad)

Hef :)

Re: TROLLING MOTORS

Kool,

ive since found out that a couple guys on forcefield site that they have tried it ,two who rewound with finer wire and the results were not good
basicaly they would have to spin like billieO to get the rated voltage, and very little amperage.
shame cause mine even looks like a turbine.they are a good little tool very rugged and well built,i live and play by a tidal river and looking at a kota site only realized then that its only meant for fresh water use, so its gonna end up either sold or swapped, if i had some big cans of paint which im allways after for me tired old hull of boat, id definatly use it for stirring lol

Re: TROLLING MOTORS

I have never torn a trolling motor down, but what I would expect to find is an iron core rotor with an odd number of windings, likely 7 to 31+ and two large permanent magnets. I would certainly expect it to be a commutator style design. The motors would be fairly high RPM (500 RPM to perhaps as much as 5,000+ no load RPM). These type motors require high RPM before they begin to produce much power. I would also expect them to exhibit a fair amount of cogging. Why would I expect this? Cause until VERY recently magnets were expensive and Copper and Iron were cheap. Perhaps with the rising cost of copper and the falling price of magnets we will see some innovative designs in the future, but I wouldn't hold my breath, the fishing industry is highly resistant to change; I would suspect we will simply see the cost of trolling motors reflect the copper commodities market,

Cheers

Re: TROLLING MOTORS

I just posted this link for someone asking about treadmill motors. I wrote this artible just for people who want to know about motors that can be used for wind generators. I was getting about 5 e-mails a day regarding this exact question. So read this and it should help you out a lot with regards to choosing a motor:
